Job Description

Under general supervision, performs work of moderate difficulty investigating unattended or unnatural deaths, and performs other work as assigned. This position reports to the Senior Medico-Legal Death Investigator. ( Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following tasks, knowledge, skills, and other characteristics. This list of tasks is ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY and is not comprehensive of all functions and tasks performed by positions in this class.) ) Gather confidential information, maintain records, and prepare reports in a timely manner. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with agencies such as law enforcement, hospital staff, federal and state agents, other staff members, and the public. Collect toxicological specimens and submit them for analysis. Assist with processing death certificates, property, and body handling records. Catalog evidentiary materials, ensuring proper collection and storage following chain of custody protocols. Ensure the quality of all forensic photography. May include crawling into tight spaces such as under houses, in attics, vehicles, and water, including navigating stairs and rough outdoor terrain. Conduct decedent removal, including rolling, carrying, and transporting to funeral homes or morgues. Must pass background investigation, drug screening, fingerprint clearance, and CVSA polygraph. Periodic checks may be conducted after employment. Knowledge of principles, practices, methods, and techniques of investigative work. Knowledge of basic laws of evidence (Arizona Revised Statutes) and relevant laws pertaining to death investigations. Skills in gathering, analyzing, and evaluating facts and evidence at death scenes. Ability to act quickly and calmly with proper judgment in emergency situations. Effective verbal and written communication skills. Prepared to work in environments involving deceased individuals and cases that may include decomposed remains. Ability to traverse, climb, and hike rough terrain (land and water) in extreme weather conditions to reach scenes, and work irregular shifts, including 24-hour shifts, weekends, and holidays. Ability to work independently, follow directions, and work with families from diverse backgrounds respectfully and compassionately. Must handle graphic scenes involving crime, suicide, vehicle accidents, etc., maintaining professionalism and composure. Potential exposure to diseases, hazardous materials, chemicals, and biological agents. Bachelor's or associate's degree in a related field, or an equivalent combination of training, education, and experience. Must be able to lift a minimum of 150 lbs alone and up to 500 lbs with assistance. Must pass background checks, criminal history checks, CVSA polygraph, and possess a valid Arizona Driver License.
